0 to 4: Your score suggests lower-risk drinking. Your answers suggest your drinking is in the lower-risk range. One honest note: a screen is a snapshot, not a verdict. If drinking still worries you, or someone you love has said something, that feeling is worth listening to regardless of a score.
5 to 7: Your score suggests your drinking may be putting your health at increasing risk. Many people score here, and most do not think of themselves as having a problem. But this is the range where drinking quietly starts costing sleep, money, mood and health. Small changes now make a big difference. Three gentle options: keep an eye on it for two weeks, talk to your GP, or sit in on one meeting just to listen.
8 to 10: Your score suggests higher-risk or harmful drinking. A score in this range is the level where the NHS would recommend talking to someone: a GP, Drinkline, or a free local alcohol service. You are not being told you are an alcoholic. You are being told you do not have to carry this alone. Meetings are free, anonymous, and you can just listen.
11 to 12: Your score suggests you may be dependent on alcohol. A score this high usually means the body has adapted to alcohol. Stopping suddenly can be dangerous. Please contact your GP or NHS 111 before cutting down sharply, so it can be done safely. This is routine for them. No lectures, no judgement. And some hope, because it matters: thousands of people with scores like this are now sober and well. The rooms are full of them.
Total score: 0 to 12. The AUDIT-C is a validated NHS screening tool. A score is a snapshot, not a diagnosis.
