Some people cannot easily get to a room: distance, transport, work patterns, caring for children, health, or simply not being ready to walk through a door. Others just want to start quietly. An online meeting removes all of that. You can listen with the camera off, use a first name only, and leave whenever you need to. It counts just the same.
Online also means choice. If your town has one meeting a week, the internet has one starting within hours, across every fellowship listed here. Many people mix the two: a local room when they can, online in between.

AA and NA have large online schedules, and you will also find Cocaine Anonymous, Gamblers Anonymous, Overeaters Anonymous, Al-Anon and Families Anonymous for family members, SMART Recovery if you prefer a non-12-step approach, and many smaller fellowships. Each one is simply an option: you are welcome to try any meeting and decide for yourself what fits.
Yes. Online meetings are free to join, exactly like in-person ones. Some groups mention voluntary contributions, and that is always optional.
