CoDA, or Co-Dependents Anonymous, is a free, anonymous twelve-step fellowship for people who want to build healthy and loving relationships. The only requirement for membership is a desire for healthy and loving relationships.

What does codependency mean?

In CoDA it is a plain word for patterns that get in the way of healthy relationships, such as losing yourself in others, struggling with boundaries, or over-giving. CoDA's own Patterns and Characteristics help you recognise yourself. They are for reflection, not a diagnosis.

Do I have to have a partner, or know an addict, to come?

Accepted Answer

No. CoDA is not only about romantic relationships, and the people in your life do not need to have an addiction. It is about your own patterns in relationships of all kinds, including with yourself.

How is CoDA different from Al-Anon?

Accepted Answer

Al-Anon focuses on being affected by someone else's drinking. CoDA focuses on relationship patterns more broadly, whatever their origin. Some people attend both, and you are welcome to see which one speaks to you.

Is CoDA free and anonymous?

Accepted Answer

Yes. There are no fees and no referrals. A basket may be passed for room costs, but you are never expected to give. What is said in the room stays in the room, and a first name is all anyone uses.
