About the fellowship

What Sexaholics Anonymous is, and who it's for.

What Sexaholics Anonymous is, who it is for, and where to find meetings in the UK.

Sexaholics Anonymous, or SA, is a free, anonymous fellowship of people recovering from what they describe as a lust-driven compulsion. Members share their experience, strength and hope so they can solve a common problem and help others recover.

There are no fees and no referral. The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop lusting and become sexually sober.

Who it's for

SA is for anyone who recognises a compulsive pattern around sex, whether that is acting out alone, with others, or in thought and fantasy. People in meetings describe a loss of control that has carried on despite the cost: to work, to health, to the people they love. You do not need a label or a diagnosis to come along.

SA publishes its own set of questions on sauk.org for people who want to reflect on whether the fellowship fits. They are there for your own thinking, not for anyone else to decide for you.

How SA defines sobriety

SA has a specific definition of sobriety, published in its own literature: no sex with self or with anyone other than one's spouse, and progressive victory over lust. This is what distinguishes SA from the related fellowships SLAA (Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous) and SAA (Sex Addicts Anonymous), which define their own bottom lines differently. The three are separate fellowships with separate meetings.

The directory lists SA, SAA and SLAA meetings. Which one fits is a decision for the member, often arrived at by trying meetings in more than one of them.

A bit of history

SA began in the United States in 1979 and arrived in the UK not long after. Its central text, the White Book, is formally titled Sexaholics Anonymous. The UK fellowship runs meetings in cities across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, in person and on Zoom.

The fellowship chooses to publish only the city or town for in-person meetings. Full venue details are given on the first contact by phone, through the UK helpline on 0300 111 7777. The directory follows that choice: SA meetings are listed to the town, and the fellowship's helpline is the way to arrange the first visit.
