For the newcomer

Do I have a cannabis problem?

Search AA, NA and other UK recovery meetings by postcode, town, or fellowship, in person or online. No sign-up. No tracking of who you are. Just the door, the time, and how to get there.

If you are asking the question at all, some part of you already senses the answer is worth looking at. That does not make you an addict, and you do not have to decide what you are today. It just means it is worth an honest look.

Signs people recognise

No single one of these settles it, and having a few does not hand you a label. But the more that feel familiar, the more your cannabis use is worth paying attention to.

  • You use more, or for longer, than you meant to.
  • You have tried to cut down or stop, and it has not stuck.
  • You need it to relax, sleep, or feel normal.
  • Your memory, motivation or concentration has slipped.
  • You use to cope with feelings more than to enjoy.
  • It is costing more money or time than you would like.
  • You keep using despite the problems it causes.
  • You feel anxious or low without it.

There is a two-minute check

If you would rather answer questions than read a list, the CUDIT-R is a short, widely used screen. It is scored on your device, and nothing is saved or sent.

You do not have to call yourself an addict

You do not have to decide what you are before you are allowed help. The only requirement for Marijuana Anonymous membership is a desire to stop using cannabis, and you can sit in on an open meeting with nothing but curiosity. Narcotics Anonymous welcomes cannabis too, and if a 12-step approach is not for you, SMART Recovery is a practical, secular alternative.

What stopping feels like

People are often surprised that cannabis has a real withdrawal. After regular use, the first week or two of stopping can bring irritability, trouble sleeping, vivid dreams, low appetite and restlessness. It is uncomfortable, but it is not dangerous, and it eases. If you are struggling, your GP or FRANK (0300 123 6600) can help, with no judgement.
