What is AA?

AA, or Alcoholics Anonymous, is a free, anonymous fellowship of people who help each other stop drinking and stay sober, using the Twelve Steps. The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking. There are no fees and no referrals.

Is AA for me?

If you wonder whether your drinking is a problem, you are welcome to come and listen. You do not have to be certain, you do not have to have hit rock bottom, and you do not have to stop drinking before your first meeting.

Is AA religious?

Accepted Answer

No. AA is spiritual, not religious, and not linked to any church or faith. It uses the idea of a higher power of your own understanding, which can be anything you choose, and atheists and agnostics are welcome. There are agnostic and secular meetings too.

Do I have to speak or give my full name?

Accepted Answer

No. You can simply listen, and AA is anonymous, so a first name is all anyone uses. On Zoom you can keep your camera off. You share only what you want, when you are ready.

Is AA free?

Accepted Answer

Yes. AA is free and self-supporting through members' own voluntary contributions. A basket may be passed for room costs, but you are never expected to give, especially as a newcomer.
