About AA

Alcoholics Anonymous is the largest recovery fellowship in the UK, with meetings in nearly every town and city, every day of the week. It is free, anonymous, and run entirely by its members. There are no fees, no waiting lists, no referrals, and no requirement to have stopped drinking before you walk in. The only thing asked of you is a desire to stop.

A meeting usually lasts about an hour. Someone chairs it, reads a short opening, and members share from their own experience of drinking and recovery. You will never be called on or made to speak. Most people sit and listen for their first few meetings, and that is completely normal. Whatever is said in the room stays in the room.

AA in the UK runs in three ways: in person in church halls, community centres and hospitals; online over Zoom; and hybrid meetings that do both at once. If your first meeting does not feel like the right fit, try another. Groups vary a lot in size and feel, and finding one that suits you can take a few tries.
