What does enabling mean?

Enabling is doing things that unintentionally soften the consequences of someone's drinking or using, like money, lifts, or covering for them, so it is easier for them to carry on. It comes from love, and noticing it does not make you to blame.

Am I enabling them?

Possibly, and that is okay to look at without shame. A gentle test is whether something protects them from the consequences of their use rather than supporting their recovery. Adfam's advice is to think through your limits, say them clearly, then follow through.

Is setting a boundary the same as giving up on them?

No. A boundary is what you will and will not do, not a punishment or an ultimatum. You can hold a limit, keep loving the person, and keep the door open all at the same time.

How do I stop enabling without abandoning them?

Change one thing at a time, say it kindly and clearly, and keep offering connection while you step back from the behaviour. Getting your own support, through Al-Anon, Families Anonymous, or a carer service, makes it far easier to hold.
