Are there women-only meetings in the UK?

Accepted Answer

Yes, more than 180 in person across the UK, plus several hundred online. There are women's meetings in London, Brighton, Manchester, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Cardiff, Bristol, Aberdeen and far beyond, in AA, NA, CA and other fellowships. A selection is on this page, and you can search the directory and look for 'women' in the meeting name.

Question 2

The room was mostly men. Is that normal?

Accepted Answer

It is common, especially in general meetings, and it is not a reason to leave. The thing the room runs on is shared whoever is in it. If you would rather be among women, women-only meetings exist all over the UK and online, and you can ask any meeting's secretary to help you find women's numbers or a women's group nearby.

Do I have to have a female sponsor?

Accepted Answer

No, it is a custom, not a rule. The real principle is simply no romantic or sexual charge in the sponsorship, so the work stays safe. Many women do choose a woman, and where women are fewer it can take longer to find one. You can take a temporary sponsor in the meantime, ask at a women's meeting, look online, and change sponsor whenever you need to.

I have romantic feelings for someone in the rooms. Is that wrong?

Accepted Answer

It is human and very common. You spend time hearing people be honest and vulnerable, and feelings happen. Most fellowships gently suggest not starting a major new relationship in early recovery so you can focus on yourself first. That is to protect you, not to control you. You can keep some distance, change to a different meeting, and be kind to yourself about it.
